During the summer children become used to a different routine. Meal and sleep schedules are often different due to long summer days, freedom from school schedules, and summer travels. In order to avoid a groggy (or worse!) household the first morning of school, slowly return to a more school-like schedule - adjusting children's bedtime and wake up times to match those of school.
Some children may be anxious about starting school, particularly if they will be attending school for the first time or if they will
be starting to a new school. Encourage your child to participate in the preparation for school. Let them help pack their lunch, backpack or pick out their clothes for the first day of school. If your child will be attending a new school, visit the school ahead
of time and tell your child about the teachers, school schedule, and school rules. Arrange a play date with other students at the school so that your child sees a familiar face on the first day
of school.
If your child will be attending school for the first time, read a book about school to your child. You will find some good books at www.maginationpress.com. Provide your child with extra attention on the during the transition period. Expect some behavioral regression (including a regression in potty training) in
the first couple of weeks. With consistency and some extra hugs, your child should adjust to the new environment.
Good luck! This is a big step for both parent and child!
